Friday, April 11th 2025: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I just got back from watching eternal sunshine and I... surprisingly don't have many thoughts on it. I liked it!
I watched it (on a big screen) for the first time ever and I went into it without looking up what it's about other than "what would you do if you could erase memories?" and honestly it's a pretty enjoyable movie. The female lead is a classic MPDG but I get why it's a trope and why it's so infamous. IT'S FUN she's whimsy and insufferable but loveable at the same time. I love Clementine. I love the romance aspects of it and how fond their memories of eachother are. I love the juxtaposition of the dream scenes vs. what was happening in real life. The guys behind me were giggling throughout some of those smash cut scenes.
Overall I'd give the movie a solid 4/5. I loved the effects they put in the dream sequences (I am a sucker for a good dream sequence) and the effects they add to convey the eerie nature of a dream. I love how the scenes morph, ebb, and flow, and switch abruptly in some cases (all justified in the narrative and plot). The plot, which is the romance, has its ups and downs but ultimately I ended up rooting for them. The side characters have their time in the spotlight and can we talk about Kristen Dunst for a second. I kept staring at her. I keep thinking of Claudia when I see her. In a good way. She's way too pretty for anyone there tbh. Out of their league.
My takeaway from this is that you should really wait 1-2 months before making any impulsive purchases.
Related but unrelated to the movie is the next thing I did after I watched it. I went to a needle punch workshop and made a coaster! I didn't design it myself but I did get some helpful hints if I do so choose to make a similar project at home! Now I have a Lady Liberty coaster, which I don't think I'll use because I'd prefer my coasters to be... non-absorbent. The workshop felt waaay to fast for what was asked of us but I ultimately finished it in time (with some struggling). My friend Van did a much better job than me and was neater in her stitches/loops. I was reckless and rushing at first but once you get into a rhythm the flow feels so good. We didn't get to keep the needles or hoops though! Sad! I did however keep some of the yarn they gave us. Dunno what I'll make out of it. Maybe put it in my scrap journal.
